Rekey vs Replace a Lock: What Charlotte Homeowners Should Know
Moving into a new home or losing a key raises a simple question: should you rekey the existing locks or replace them? The right choice depends on the condition of the hardware, the kind of access you want, and your security needs.
What rekeying means
For a typical residential pin-tumbler lock, a locksmith changes the pins inside the cylinder so a new key operates it and the previous key no longer does. The existing door hardware stays in place.
Rekeying can make sense when:
- You have moved and do not know who has copies of the old keys.
- A key has been lost or given to someone who should no longer have access.
- Your locks work properly and you want to keep the existing hardware.
- You want several compatible locks to operate with one key.
Not every lock can be keyed alike. The cylinders must be compatible; different keyways or hardware types may require a cylinder or lock replacement. Electronic access codes and some specialized lock systems need a different approach.
When replacing a lock makes sense
Replacement may be the better choice when the hardware is damaged, badly worn, or no longer meets your needs. It also lets you change the finish, choose a suitable higher-security deadbolt, or install a compatible smart lock.
A sticking lock does not automatically need replacement. Door alignment, the strike plate, or maintenance may be the issue. A locksmith should assess the cause before recommending new hardware. Adding a deadbolt may also require door preparation; it is not simply a swap for a knob.
Can all your doors use one key?
Often, yes, if the locks use compatible cylinders. Tell us which doors you want to include and send an optional photo of the hardware. We can assess whether rekeying is sufficient or whether some hardware needs to change.
How pricing works
Rekeying usable hardware often costs less than supplying and installing new locks, but the total depends on the number and type of locks, the work needed, and your location. YOUR LOCKSMITHS residential services start at $70; this is a service starting price, not a fixed per-lock rekey price. We explain the proposed work and price before starting. Travel is not billed as a separate call-out fee.
Should you use a DIY rekey kit?
A compatible kit may work for someone comfortable handling small pins and springs. The kit must match the lock, and some kits require a working original key. Incorrect assembly can leave the lock unreliable. If you are unsure, have the lock assessed professionally rather than risk losing access to your home.
Get help choosing the right option
If the hardware is sound but you need to change who has access, ask about rekeying. If the hardware is damaged or you want an upgrade, discuss replacement and installation options.
